You can find the Spyder 4 Pro on Amazon for about $130. In addition, you can set it to remind you when you run a calibration check or a re-calibration. It is nice too that if you keep the calibration device plugged in, it will check ambient light on a predetermined schedule. The software is pretty user friendly and walks you through the whole process. I like the simplicity and the ease of use. I tested on both Mac and Windows machines and it worked well. The software loads the calibration when you login and the Datacolor Spyder 4 software starts up. The calibration takes about 10 minutes per monitor and then it has you save the preset. This you'll do with your monitor's controls. The calibration then runs pretty much all on its own until it asks you to set the brightness. I usually am in lower light so I kept it at 6500k and about 120 cd/m2 on the brightness. The software starts out by taking a ambient light reading which it uses to determine how bright your monitors should be and at what color temperature. I resorted to using tape to make it fit right on the screen until I got to the last monitor and realized it moved, quite convenient. Pro tip: the in-line counterweight that is attached to the USB cable is actually adjustable. After that, I plugged in the device and followed the prompts to calibrate my monitors. I opened the box, downloaded the most recent software release off Datacolor's website and installed it. There was very little setup if any for the Syder 4. Simple enough though, all versions use very similar hardware and are separated by what seems to be almost entirely software features getting more the more you pay. There are three versions, the Pro being the middle option. I chose the pro because I needed multi-monitor calibration which the cheaper version does not have, and I didn't need the "elite" version for all of it's high customization. After much research, I decided to go with the Datacolor Spyder 4 Pro device. I had spent some time calibrating my ASUS IPS monitors with the popular AVS HD 709 calibration, and while I had gotten some good results, I knew they weren't perfect. This is why I decided it was time to calibrate my monitors with a hardware device.

If you take a nice landscape shot and the colors are a bit off, most people won't think much of it. As I am starting to do more portrait work, color becomes increasingly important.
